Culture & Everyday Etiquette
Singaporeans are polite, punctual and quietly formal. A few tips that go a long way:
- Remove your shoes when entering homes and places of worship.
- Dress modestly at temples and mosques — cover shoulders and knees.
- Queueing is a national sport. Wait your turn at bus stops, MRT platforms and hawker stalls.
- Chewing gum, jaywalking and littering carry real fines — stay on the safe side.
- Tipping is not expected in restaurants; a 10% service charge is already added.
Getting Around
The MRT is fast, air-conditioned and covers all the tourist areas. Buy an EZ-Link card at any station, or tap a contactless credit card at the gate. Taxis and Grab rides are affordable — expect around S$10–15 across the city centre. When to Visit
Singapore is warm year-round (27°C average) with two mild monsoons. February to April is drier and slightly less humid — often considered the sweet spot. June to August brings school-holiday events like the Great Singapore Sale and National Day (9 August). November to January is the wettest stretch, but showers pass quickly and the light displays around Christmas and Chinese New Year are worth the umbrella.
